Deaths in Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones not only set new standards in storytelling and setting, but the series also broke some of the most common clichés that viewers could be sure of up to that point. Namely, that main characters don’t die, and the good guys always win. After seven seasons of murdering, torturing, and warring, there were certainly more than a handful of moments when we screamed at our TV in disbelief and anger. But that’s also what makes the series so appealing. Time to take a look back at the deaths of a series that probably has a higher hero death rate than anything we’ve seen before.

No half-assing

From the first season, viewers knew GoT was no ordinary series. When the supposed protagonist Ned Stark is decapitated at the end of the first season, it is clear to everyone that no one is safe from death here. Fifty-nine deaths are recorded in the first season, including that of the king of Westeros. With his demise, the battle for the iron throne is opened at the latest.

The second season then comes up with 130 deaths, whereby actually only one essential character dies, Renly Baratheon. A bit more leisurely, one might think at first, is how things go in season three. A total of 87 characters die. But the comparatively low number of deaths doesn’t hide how much we were affected by the red wedding, in the course, we have to say goodbye to our Stark favorites, Robb and Catelyn.

But at least in the next season the Lannisters will be dealt with. Because in this season, the sadistic king Joffrey Baratheon is poisoned, and his own son murders Tywin Lannister. In the entire season, 181 characters, including 61 from the ranks of the wildlings alone, die in the battle against the Night’s Watch.

No end in sight

But then the series really picks up steam in season five regarding the number of deaths. You can watch someone die 246 times in this season. Among them, Jon Snow is torn from life for a short time, even if he is revived in the next season. Also, in this season, things get busy with the White Walkers. After all, 59 members of the army of the dead now find their hopefully final rest.

540 characters die in the sixth season. Partly responsible for this high number is the infamous Battle of the Bastards, in which Jon Snow meets the crazy Ramsay Bolton. In the episode in which the battle takes place, 154 soldiers die. The Lannisters also lose many lives this season: 166 soldiers die.

So far, the season with the most deaths is and remains season seven. The actors involved in the finished season simulate kicking the bucket a total of 1,096 times. Especially the White Walkers have to record great losses. An incredible 838 undead are slaughtered in this season. But the final battle for the fate of Westeros has not even begun!

It’s also interesting to look at which characters have killed the most people in the meantime. Cersei Lannister is with 199 murders even before the two dragons Rhaegal and Drogon. Jon Snow has also recorded 86 kills, and the outwardly inconspicuous Arya Stark has already killed 64 times in the series up to season 7.

Final score

An impressive 2,339 deaths occurred in Game of Thrones by the end of the seventh season. It’s pretty impressive that half of that number comes from the seventh season alone.
