Chainsaw Man is a popular manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The series was first published in December 2018 and is set in the genres of action, dark fantasy, and horror.

The story revolves around Denji, a young man who enters into a contract with Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, allowing him to transform into a human-like chainsaw. Denji then works as a so-called Chainsaw Man for a special organization that hunts demons.

The series is known for its brutal and gritty style, as well as its unpredictable plot. Chainsaw Man enjoyed great popularity and gained a considerable following. In December 2020, it was announced that Chainsaw Man will receive an anime adaptation, which was then released in 2022.

Denji

Denji is a fascinating protagonist. At the story’s beginning, he is a poor, struggling teenager who has to pay off debts after his father’s death. When he enters into a contract with the demon Pochita, he becomes Chainsaw Man and gets incredible powers. Denji is an impulsive, often unruly character, but he has a kind of naive heart and a strong will to survive. Throughout the story, he evolves while facing the challenges of the demon hunter’s life and the complex relationships with his allies.

Power

Power is a female demon who is rescued by Denji and joins him. She is wild, rude, and has a rebellious personality. Power is known for her brutal fighting ability and raw strength. Although she often strikes a slightly aggressive tone, she also shows a certain vulnerability and attachment to Denji over time. The relationship between Denji and Power is marked by conflict but also by moments of trust and cooperation.

Makima

Makima is a mysterious and manipulative character in Chainsaw Man. She is the lead of the Public Safety Devil Hunters (and her own division – Tokyo Special Division 4) that Denji works for and has an aura of authority and dominance. Makima can give orders everyone must follow and is very attracted to other characters. She pursues her own agenda and has her own motives, which are gradually revealed. Makima is a multilayered and obscure character that significantly influences the course of the plot.

Aki

Aki is an experienced demon hunter and another member of the Public Safety Devil Hunters (Tokyo Special Division 4). Unlike Denji, Aki is serious and disciplined. He is a gifted fighter and has a certain cool reserve in his demeanor. Initially, Aki views Denji with suspicion and considers him unreliable, but as the story progresses, he develops a deeper connection and friendship. Aki also struggles with personal demons and faces inner conflicts that affect his actions.

Since Chainsaw Man is pretty dark and brutal, I thought I’d write a bit more about how the anime deals with dark themes.

Denji, the protagonist, lost his father early in his life and struggles with the emotional and financial impact of this experience. Losing loved ones is a recurring motif that shapes the characters and drives their actions. The series also explores the impact of loss on identity and the quest for revenge or redemption.

• Loneliness: Loneliness is another central theme in Chainsaw Man. The main characters, especially Denji, Power, and Aki, often feel isolated and alone in a world full of demons and betrayals. Their search for connection and the difficulties that come with it give the story a melancholy atmosphere. The loneliness also highlights the characters’ emotional struggles and inner conflicts.

• Existentialism: The series also touches on existential questions about the meaning of life and the search for meaning. Denji is confronted with the sudden acquisition of his powers and the responsibility of fighting demons as Chainsaw Man. The characters in Chainsaw Man struggle with the question of whether there is a higher purpose and whether they can find meaning in a world filled with violence and death. These existential questions are reflected in the characters’ motives and choices.

• The Nature of Evil: Chainsaw Man also questions the nature of evil. The series shows that evil does not always lie in demons but also in humans’ actions and intentions. The lines between good and evil blur as characters face moral dilemmas and must come to terms with their own darkness. The series explores the complexities of evil and whether redemption is possible.
